What is the difference between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B

GSTR-1 reports detailed outward sales invoices; GSTR-3B is the summary return used to declare liability and pay GST.

GSTR-1 is a detailed return reporting all outward sales invoices for a period, while GSTR-3B is a summary return used to declare total tax liability and pay GST.

GSTR-1 in plain words

GSTR-1 is your sales statement. You list (or the system pulls) B2B invoices, B2C large invoices, credit/debit notes, and other outward supplies for the month or quarter. Buyers use this data (through GSTR-2A/2B) to check their input tax credit.

Think of GSTR-1 as: “Here is every bill I raised.”

GSTR-3B in plain words

GSTR-3B is your tax payment summary. You declare total outward tax, eligible ITC, and the net GST you must pay for the period. You pay liability based on GSTR-3B (with adjustments as per current rules).

Think of GSTR-3B as: “Here is the tax I owe after ITC.”

Side-by-side

  • Purpose: GSTR-1 reports sales invoice details; GSTR-3B summarises tax and is used to pay GST.
  • Detail level: GSTR-1 is invoice-level (plus other tables); GSTR-3B is summary figures.
  • For buyers: GSTR-1 supports their ITC matching; GSTR-3B is not an invoice list.
  • Payment: GSTR-1 does not itself collect tax; GSTR-3B is used to compute and pay tax.

A simple monthly example

You issue 80 GST invoices in June totalling ₹10 lakh taxable value and ₹1.8 lakh GST. In GSTR-1 you report those invoices. In GSTR-3B you report the same period’s totals, claim eligible ITC from purchases (say ₹1.2 lakh), and pay the difference (₹60,000) as per your calculation and due dates.

If GSTR-1 sales and GSTR-3B totals do not line up over time, you may face notices or ITC mismatches for your customers. Keeping books tidy month by month is easier than fixing gaps later.

How to keep both accurate

  • Record every sale invoice with correct GSTIN, HSN, and tax
  • Post purchase bills so ITC is ready when you file GSTR-3B
  • Reconcile sales and ITC before filing
  • File on time for your turnover and return frequency

Billoxy keeps itemised sales and purchase records through the month, which makes preparing both GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B clearer for you or your accountant.
