GSTR-2B is the auto-drafted input tax credit (ITC) statement on the GST portal. It is built from what your suppliers reported in their returns. For a shop, trader, or small manufacturer, the job is practical: compare your purchase invoices with what GSTR-2B shows before you (or your accountant) claim ITC in GSTR-3B.
This note is updated 12 October 2026. It explains how an MSME should read GSTR-2B. It is not a filing guide, and it is not tax advice. Confirm the current portal screens and cut-off dates on the GST portal and the GSTR-2B viewing manual.
What GSTR-2B is
The GST portal describes Form GSTR-2B as an auto-drafted ITC statement. It is generated for every registered person from information furnished by suppliers in Form GSTR-1 / IFF / GSTR-1A and Form GSTR-5, and from ITC received through Form GSTR-6 (Input Service Distributor).
In plain words:
- Your suppliers file their sales details.
- The portal builds a period statement of documents that can support your ITC.
- The statement shows, for those documents, whether credit is treated as available, not available, to reverse, or rejected (as the current summary tables show).
Searchers often ask what is GSTR-2B. The short answer: it is the static monthly ITC snapshot you use to check purchases — not a return you fill in like GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B.
GSTR-2A vs GSTR-2B
Both statements relate to inward supplies. They are not the same tool.
| Point | GSTR-2A | GSTR-2B |
|---|---|---|
| Nature | Changes as suppliers file or amend | Fixed statement for a tax period after portal cut-offs |
| Everyday use | Live view of what suppliers have uploaded | Month-end ITC check against your books |
| Filing role | Not the return you file | Supports the ITC you declare in GSTR-3B |
For most MSMEs, the working habit is: keep purchase bills tidy all month, then use GSTR-2B with your accountant before GSTR-3B. Use GSTR-2A when you need a live check that a supplier has uploaded a bill. Do not treat either statement as a guarantee that every line is eligible ITC under the Act.
What GSTR-2B is not
Keep these separations clear. Mixing them is how ITC claims go wrong.
- GSTR-2B is not GST 2.0. GST 2.0 is the September 2025 rate reform for the tax you charge on sales. GSTR-2B is the portal purchase ITC statement. A rate change on your item master does not replace month-end matching of supplier bills.
- GSTR-2B is not GSTR-1. GSTR-1 is your sales statement. See the difference between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B.
- GSTR-2B is not GSTR-3B. GSTR-3B is the summary return where tax is declared and paid, including the ITC you claim.
- GSTR-2B does not replace a valid GST tax invoice or the other legal conditions for claiming ITC.
- A bill of supply from a composition dealer does not create ITC the way a tax invoice does — do not expect that line to behave like a taxable B2B purchase in GSTR-2B.
- Billoxy does not file GSTR-2B, GSTR-3B, or any GST return for you.
How to open GSTR-2B on the portal
The official viewing steps are on the GST tutorial. In outline:
- Sign in at gst.gov.in.
- Open Services → Returns → Returns Dashboard (or Return Dashboard).
- Choose the financial year and period, then search.
- Open the GSTR-2B tile — View on the portal when document counts allow, or Download Excel / JSON when the statement is large.
The portal summary (as documented from October 2024 onward) groups lines into areas such as ITC available, ITC not available, ITC reversal, and ITC rejected, with links into document tables. Use View Advisory on the portal for the cut-off dates that applied when that period’s statement was built. Do not invent those dates from memory.
A month-end checklist for MSME purchases
Work from your books first, then the portal — not the other way around.
- List every purchase tax invoice you booked for the period: supplier GSTIN, invoice number, date, taxable value, and CGST/SGST or IGST.
- Open GSTR-2B for the same period and download or view the document tables.
- Match invoice by invoice. Same GSTIN, same invoice number, same tax amounts. Mark matches.
- Chase missing lines. If you have a bill in hand but nothing in GSTR-2B, the supplier may not have reported it yet, or the document may sit under a different table. Ask the supplier; do not invent a fix on the return.
- Check “not available”, reversal, and rejected buckets before you assume every portal line is claimable. Rejected lines on the IMS flow are called out in the portal manual — involve your accountant when those appear.
- Apply credit notes and debit notes the same way you apply invoices. A credit note or debit note that changes tax must be in both your books and the statement that reflects the supplier’s filing.
- Only then decide with your accountant what eligible ITC to take in GSTR-3B for that period.
That matching step is what people mean by GSTR-2B reconciliation. Spreadsheet tools and filing products exist for large volumes. For a small shop, a clear purchase register plus the portal Excel is often enough — as long as someone actually compares the lines.
Three shop-floor examples
1. Clean match You bought packing material from a registered supplier. The tax invoice is in your purchase records. The same invoice number and tax appear under ITC available in GSTR-2B. Subject to the other ITC conditions, this is the line your accountant expects to see.
2. Bill in hand, blank in GSTR-2B You paid a wholesaler and filed the paper invoice, but GSTR-2B has no matching document for that period. ITC is at risk until the supplier reports the invoice. Follow up with the supplier. Do not invent a portal line.
3. Portal line you never booked GSTR-2B shows a supplier invoice you do not recognise. Do not claim that credit. Check whether the GSTIN is yours, whether the goods arrived, and whether a staff purchase was left unbooked. Wrong claims create notices later.
How this connects to billing software
Billing software does not replace the GST portal. It keeps the purchase side of your books in one place so the month-end match is possible.
Useful checks inside a GST billing product:
- Every supplier bill saved with GSTIN, invoice number, HSN/SAC, and the tax split that matches the paper or e-invoice.
- Credit and debit notes linked to the original purchase where your process requires it.
- A purchase list you can export or review for the same month you open on GSTR-2B.
Billoxy is GST billing, invoicing, inventory, and business-management software for Indian MSMEs. You record sales and purchase documents with GST fields; the software offer is a 10-day trial. Billoxy does not download GSTR-2B for you and does not file returns. Clean purchase records still make the portal match faster for you or your CA.
If you only need one sales invoice and you do not want an account, the GST invoice generator is a no-signup builder with GST fields. It is not a purchase register and it is not a reconciliation tool. Shops that buy and sell every day should keep purchases inside the product, then start the 10-day trial or compare plans on pricing.
Questions MSMEs ask
Is GSTR-2B a return I must file?
No. You view and download it. You do not “file GSTR-2B” the way you file GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B.
When is GSTR-2B generated?
The portal builds the statement for each tax period using cut-off dates shown in the GSTR-2B advisory on the portal for that period. Open View Advisory on the GSTR-2B screen rather than relying on a date remembered from an old blog.
Should I claim every amount shown as ITC available?
No. Portal availability is not the same as legal eligibility. Blocked credits, personal use, wrong documents, and time limits still apply. Use your accountant for borderline lines.
What if my purchase is under reverse charge?
Reverse-charge purchases follow different liability and credit rules. Read reverse charge under GST and confirm with your CA before treating an RCM bill like a normal forward-charge purchase in GSTR-2B.
Will Billoxy reconcile GSTR-2B automatically?
No. Billoxy helps you keep GST purchase and sales records. Matching those records to GSTR-2B on the portal (or with your accountant’s tool) remains a separate step.
Did GST 2.0 replace GSTR-2B?
No. GST 2.0 changed many notified rates on invoices. It did not remove GSTR-2B. You still match purchases to the portal statement before claiming ITC.
